Trotec Laser Speedy 100: A Purchasing Checklist from Someone Who Actually Processes the Orders

A practical checklist for buying a Trotec laser system as an admin buyer. Covers Trotec Laser Speedy 100, desktop laser marking machines, parts like fiber laser mirrors, and the hidden costs.

If you're the person who has to order a laser system and you aren't a laser engineer, this checklist is for you. I've been the office administrator for a 40-person design and prototyping company since 2020. That means I handle the purchase orders, the supplier follow-ups, and the invoice reconciliation. Over the years, I've processed maybe 120 equipment-related orders. Maybe 110. I'd have to check the spreadsheet. Laser equipment was one of those purchases that landed on my desk with a lot of technical terms and not a lot of practical guidance. This is the checklist I wish I'd had when I started looking at Trotec laser systems.

This is for anyone considering a Trotec laser Speedy 100, a desktop laser marking machine, or another Trotec system. Five steps. Step order matters. Skip the first one and you'll end up paying for capability you don't need — or, worse, can't use.

Step 1: Define the Job Before You Define the Machine

Most laser buying advice starts with power and laser source. That's backwards. Start with the work you need to put through the machine. When I took over purchasing, I assumed "laser" was one category. Didn't verify. Turned out there are two very different decisions hiding under the same word.

  • What materials will you process? Wood, acrylic, coated metal, bare metal?
  • What is the largest part you need to fit in the work area?
  • Do you need to cut through material, engrave the surface, or both?
  • How many parts per day? If it's under 20, a compact Speedy 100 may be enough. If it's hundreds, plan for a faster system.

This matters because a Trotec laser Speedy 100 is a CO2 platform. A CO2 laser is excellent for acrylic, wood, and many plastics. It's not the right tool for direct metal marking. If you need to mark stainless steel or aluminum, you may be looking at a fiber laser. That's a different machine, with a different price, and a different set of consumables.

Step 2: Match the Laser Source to the Material

Simple version: CO2 lasers handle non-metals. Fiber lasers handle metal marking. Some systems combine both, but a combined system is a compromise. I'm not saying that's bad. I'm saying you should know what you're giving up.

People think expensive machines do more things. Actually, a machine that does one or two things very well is worth more. The causation runs the other way. If a rep tells you a Speedy 100 will mark your metal parts too, ask for a sample. "We'll test your material" is the phrase you want to hear. If they say "trust me, it'll work," treat that as a yellow flag.

For our shop, the answer was a CO2 system for wood and acrylic, because 90% of our orders were those materials. The other 10% we sent out to a local laser service. That was a better financial decision than buying a bigger machine with more optical capability we'd rarely use.

Step 3: Verify Accessories and Consumables, Not Just the Base Machine

This is the step that most people skip. The base machine is the part that gets comparisons, but the accessories are where the operational costs hide. Ask for a complete list of consumables and recommended spare parts.

If you're looking at a CO2 system like the Speedy 100, that usually means lenses, mirrors, exhaust filters, and maybe a honeycomb table. If you're evaluating a desktop laser marking machine from Trotec's fiber line, ask about scanner head mirrors and protective windows. And be precise about part names. In our team's notes, I've seen the phrase "fiber laser mirror" come up. A fiber laser doesn't use a beam path of mirrors in the same way a CO2 laser does. The beam travels through a fiber cable; the mirrors in a fiber marking head are scanner mirrors. If a vendor quotes a "fiber laser mirror" as a generic spare, ask for the exact part number. Exact part numbers matter.

This also applies to confusion about cutting processes. A plasma cutter adapter is for plasma cutting, not laser cutting. Plasma uses a different heat source, different consumables, and a different power supply. If you're buying a Trotec laser, you don't need a plasma cutter adapter. If you replace some of your plasma jobs with laser jobs, great, but the machines are not modular in that way. (A salesperson who says otherwise is not your friend.)

Step 4: Ask About Support, Training, and Trotec Laser Inc. Service

A laser is a capital purchase. It sits in your shop for years. The company behind it matters.

When I evaluate a supplier, I ask four questions:

  • Is installation and operator training included in the price?
  • What is the typical response time for service requests?
  • Where are replacement parts stocked?
  • Does the quote include the software license?

I don't have hard data on Trotec Laser Inc.'s service response times nationwide. I can say anecdotally, from our experience with a different equipment vendor, that a support rep who returns a voicemail within two business days is worth more than an extra year of warranty. The warranty only helps when someone shows up.

Step 5: Get a Line-Item Quote and Calculate Total Cost

Do not accept a one-line quote. A laser system purchase includes more than the machine. Ask for each item:

  • Base system hardware
  • Laser source or tube
  • Software license and updates
  • Optics / lens package
  • Exhaust or filtration system
  • Shipping and rigging
  • Installation and training
  • First-year consumables, if any

I want to say one quote we reviewed included a rotary attachment as a separate line, but don't quote me on that. The point is every vendor structures quotes differently. If you don't separate the items, you can't compare.

"Cheapest" is not just the sticker price. It's the total cost including your time troubleshooting, the risk of downtime, and the quality of the invoice. A supplier that can't provide clear invoicing cost us $2,400 in rejected expenses once. That wasn't a laser vendor, but the lesson stuck: verify the paperwork before you sign.

This was accurate as of my last purchasing cycle in Q1 2025. Laser product lines and pricing change. Verify current specs and current prices before you set a budget.

Final Checks and Common Mistakes

1. Don't over-buy the wrong capability

A larger machine with more power isn't automatically better. It takes more floor space, uses more electricity, and may require more maintenance. A desktop laser marking machine manufacturer likely offers entry models that meet 80% of a small shop's needs. Not ideal for high-volume production, but workable. Know which 20% you'd be giving up.

2. Check clearances and utilities before delivery

Laser systems need clearance for the exhaust, the cabinet doors, and maintenance access. I didn't measure the door clearance before we took delivery of a cabinet machine once. Ugh. Still embarrassed about that. Check the spec sheet for required clearances.

3. Test with your own materials

Ask for a test engraving or cutting sample using your actual material. Not a similar material. Your material. A material sample test is exactly what we needed to decide between the Speedy 100 and a larger model. If a dealer won't do it, that tells you something.

4. Clarify what "desktop" means

Desktop laser marking machine is not a standardized category. One manufacturer's desktop model may have a 12" x 8" work area. Another might be larger than your kitchen table. Confirm the work area dimensions in your preferred units. And remember that the work area is not the same as the maximum part height, so check that too.

No laser is the best laser for every material. There are machines that fit materials, volumes, and budgets. A vendor that tells you one machine does everything isn't helping you—they're selling you before they've listened.

That's the checklist. It won't make the laser engineering decision for you. It will keep you from missing the boring parts. The boring parts are where the big expenses hide.
